A brinicle (brine icicle) is a hollow, downward-growing tube of ice that forms beneath sea ice in polar oceans. Also known as an "ice stalactite," it occurs when extremely cold, hypersaline water (brine) sinks from the freezing sea ice above into the warmer, less salty water below.
